The Hidden Power Books

The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 was the first book in the Hidden Power book series launched by Sybex in 2002. The book and series were conceived by the author, Richard Lynch, when he took a moment between Photoshop book projects to play around with Photoshop Elements. After only a few minutes working with Elements he found a lot more power in the program than he had suspected from what he'd heard. Within a few hours, he'd found a way to access several of the most important tools — that Elements was said not to have — hidden away in the interface.

Not long after this discovery, Richard set about making a list of what tools and functions he would need in a serious image editing program and set out to create a means of imitating, duplicating and working around supposed limitations in Elements. When every one of the limitations was overcome, he proposed the book idea to several publishers based on the idea that he should write an advanced book on editing images with Elements.

Most of the publishers politely rejected the proposal, offering instead to look at proposals for his next Photoshop book. The publishers suggested that Elements was not appropriate for an advanced book on image editing. This was true if you believed entirely what the manufacturer said or what you heard on the Internet about Elements being nothing more than a 'dumbed-down' version of Photoshop.

Richard knew that Photoshop users needed an alternative, and that there were many serious photographers using Elements. He didn't give up, and soon after found an editor at Sybex who understood the potential that Richard said was in Elements. A little more than half a year later when the book hit the shelves, it quickly became a best-seller amongst Elements books because of the unique, advanced, no-nonsense, perspective it offered on fundamental techniques for image editing; and the tools it added to the Elements arsenal included on the CD.

And Now...

Almost exactly 2 years later, The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 3 was released, expanding on the tool set and page length of the original book by over 20%, again to positive reviews. The new goal for Hidden Power is to build an exclusive area for Elements enthusiasts in a community so they have access to answers for the most difficult Elements questions and a means of adding features and enhancements to help get day-to-day work done — without having to make a bigger investment in Photoshop.
