History
Richard was involved with photography and the darkroom from a young age, and was introduced to image scanning, digital art and pixel manipulation in the mid 1980s. After years of dabbling with digital animation and rudimentary image editing programs on Mac and PC to create art and logos in black-and-white and color, Richard started working with digital images full-time in 1992 as an editor and image technician at a small how-to photography book publisher, using Photoshop 2.5. Working closely with printers and imaging services for the next 5 years, he developed an intimate knowledge of the application of digital images, and a streamlined workflow for image adjustment and correction for black-and-white and color images going into print.
These concentrated years in digital design and image development trenches -- making critical adjustments to images for print -- serve as the basis for the no-nonsense techniques Richard uses in his books, techniques and courses on image editing.
Richard continues to use Photoshop and Photoshop Elements daily, continues to do freelance work as a consultant in imaging and image editing, and continues to develop new tools and techniques for users of Photoshop and Elements. His goal is to help users simplify image processing and clarify how to use difficult procedures and concepts in the daily workflow. His work with Photoshop Elements makes the program more robust by adding many features thought only to be in Photoshop via tools he has customized for Elements and Elements users.
